When I went to Pondicherry, I had no idea about things to do in Pondicherry. But, here I’m sharing my personal experiences from my solo trip to help you enjoy the best places in Pondicherry.

Probably my stubborn nature, towards certain things, made Pondicherry possible. It is the capital of Indian union territory of Puducherry.

The beaches, the streets, the French cuisine, the south Indian coffee and the fresh air drew me towards it. Since it was my first solo trip, I had to plan things properly.

How to Reach Pondicherry

If you’re planning to travel by air then there are daily flights traveling from Bangalore to Pondicherry airport.

The nearest junction railway station from Pondicherry is Villupuram, which is about 35 kilometers away from the town. The railhead is well-connected to cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum.

Two of the most popular trains are New Delhi Pondicherry Express and Nagarcoli Express.

After reaching the station, you can take a private taxi and head towards the destination.

The best connectivity is by road. You can take a bus from Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore.

Things to Do in Pondicherry

After 13hrs of the journey, from Hyderabad, I finally reached my destination. I took up a cycle on rent and roamed freely, not worrying where to go, where to stop, where not to stop and when to proceed further.

I had the complete freedom to do whatever I want but I also had to be cautious as I was alone and all the decision had to be taken only by me.

#1 Sri Aurobindo Ashram

The first place which I visited was Sri Aurobindo Ashram. it was beautiful, calm and peaceful. The ashram grew out of a small community of disciples who had gathered around Sri Aurobindo after he retired from politics and settled here.

Photography is not allowed inside the ashram so just connect to its beauty with the silence and serenity.

#2 Rock Beach and churches

Rock Beach in Pondicherry

This Beach barricaded by rock bolsters are a treat if you are looking for a morning evening walk. It’s really crowded during the morning and evening hours. It is a very popular beach in Pondicherry among the tourists and locals as well.

Just spend some time sitting on the rocks and observe the sea. You can also strike up a conversation with strangers over there. Do visit the Le café and try out the lemonade over there, it’s really refreshing.

After my meditation at the sea, I had lunch at an Italian restaurant; the pizza was different from what we usually have.

If you’re looking for things to do in Pondicherry at night, then my personal favorite will be sitting at the Rock Beach (as there is 24 hours opened cafe – not that good, though) and you can find all the dogs barking, as you’re all alone.

Pondicherry Travel Tips – Keep wandering the streets, having no clear direction, visit the churches and get to know about the French culture.

#3 Auroville

Pondicherry trip Highway monks Things to do, how to reach

The hotel receptionist had given me a map and advised me to visit Auroville. But, that was 15 KM from my hotel and I couldn’t go on a cycle that far.

So, I traveled there by the local bus. The fare was very cheap only 5 INR, I got to speak with local people and then the bus dropped me at Auroville.

Auroville is famous for Matri Mandir. I had to go by auto as it was far from the bus stop. The auto driver dropped me at a place and promised to pick me back again after my visit.

Matri Mandir is a 2 KM walk from the place and is one of the beautiful and peaceful places and among the must visit Place in Pondicherry.

You can also go inside the Mandir and meditate but, you must book it in advance, at least 2 months before. The stay at Auroville is cheap; you can even do social work and some monthly courses.

#4 Auro Beach

After the spiritual visit to Matri Mandir, my heart then told me to visit Auro beach, which is one of the Most beautiful beaches in India. I had to walk on a narrow pathway to reach the beach, which was exciting.

The time spent at Auro beach was a memorable one. The sea liberates you from your problems, the sun rays kisses you, the hot sand makes you feel alive, the sound of the waves soothes you and the coconut water relaxes you.

#5 Café de arts

It was the last day of my trip, my bus was at 6:00 PM so I decided just to relax and wander in the city.

The lemonade at Le Café (rock beach) was so refreshing, the ambiance and the food was so incredible that I was left flattered. I spent most of my time at Café de arts, talking to some artist, the owner, clicking some pictures.

It is a must visit place for its ambiance, French cuisine and reading some good novels. If you’re looking to spend your time in Pondicherry as a tourist then this place might not excite you more.

You can visit the museum or the botanical garden but it won’t satisfy you enough.

Visit as a traveler, just wander having no clear direction!

The local people are open and very helpful, be it the French or the Tamilians. Just spend your time with the local people and they will surely make you engaged in some creative stuff which will make your trip a memorable experience.

For me, the time spent there will always be special. The secrets can be shared with the sea, and the streets can hear your silence. You will not be the same person once you’ve returned because it’s a place where a part of you will be left, forever!

Did you like my solo trip experience and things to do in Pondicherry blog post I just shared?
